Pizza. Everybody loves ๐Ÿ•. Thatโ€™s not up for debate. But what do you ๐Ÿ‘ or ๐Ÿ‘Ž as pizza toppings? Now THAT is up for debate.

Some people may eat more pizza. On the other hand, some may eat less. But the average person eats 46 slices of pizza per year. That adds up to about 23 pounds of pizza eaten annually. (Source: https://www.creditdonkey.com/pizza-statistics.html)

Sounds like a lot? If you have pizza twice a month and eat just two slices each time, thatโ€™s 48 slices!

State “Pizza Toppings List” Survey

New Yorkers were asked to pick their favorite pizza toppings last week. It was part of an exercise to practice โ€œranked-choice votingโ€ ahead of a June Primary Election.

Pizza toppings as a visual aid? Ok. Iโ€™ll bite ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ. How did they vote?

  1. pepperoni 8,767
  2. sausage 3,040
  3. pineapple 2,562
  4. mushrooms 2,459
  5. olives 914

Was pepperoni a surprise leading the list of the most favorite topping? Not to me.

National “Pizza Toppings List” Survey

As it turns out, there was a national pizza toppings survey conducted earlier this year by YouGov. It is an international research data and analytics group headquartered in London. The survey involved approx. 6000 US Adults.

Most liked toppings in the US are:

  1. pepperoni (64%),
  2. sausage (56%),
  3. mushrooms (54%),
  4. extra cheese (52%),
  5. onions (48%).

Is โ€œextra cheeseโ€ really a topping?

Meanwhile, this is surprising.

The Pizza Need website reveals that chefs in Brazil top their pizzas with green peas. It says the French love fried eggs on their slices. And in China a crust made of mini-hot dogs is popular.

In addition, the website says that among the most popular gourmet toppings are oysters, crayfish, dandelions, sprouts, cajun shrimp, and tuna.

Some of those sound like they might be on the most disliked list.

Most disliked toppings in the US are:

  1. anchovies (61%).
  2. eggplant (52%),
  3. artichoke (44%),
  4. broccoli (39%),
  5. pineapple (35%).

Why do people feel so negative about the anchovy? Perhaps it is the salty taste (like a slice of pepperoni is not salty?). Or maybe people just donโ€™t like the look of them. Frankly, thatโ€™s a whole other blog.

Seeking Out Experts

I decided to explore the preferences of four pizza aficionados. What did Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and most especially Michelangelo like on their pizzas? In no particular order:

๐Ÿ• Chocolate fudge, sardine, chili pepper, and whipped cream
๐Ÿ• Granola and licorice
๐Ÿ• Pepperoni and hot fudge
๐Ÿ• Pepperoni and pickles
๐Ÿ• Butterscotch, onions, and anchovies

So it would seem even amongst the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, pepperoni was a favorite. But they also liked anchovies. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Just proves there are pizza toppings that go with every taste.

So it is no wonder that even during the Covid crisis, consumers still opted for pizza takeout and delivery. Pizza restaurant sales reached over 46 billion U.S. dollars in 2020.

Do you get your pizza from the wood-fired oven of Bambolina? Or under the watchful eye of a Borg at Flying Saucer Pizza? Or do you get it delivered from neighborhood stops like Georgia’s or Dina’s?

We all have our go-to spot for pizza.

Whatโ€™s your go-to for a pizza topping?
