What can you add to pizza to make it healthier? Chickpeas!!! Not as a topping, but as the crust. Yes, chickpea pizza crust is a thing. And no, this is not an isolated specialty of a neighborhood hole-in-the-wall pizza joint.

Recently the  USDA published guidelines recommending that people should eat chickpeas, beans, and lentils 1-3 times per week. But it seems 80% of the country is not participating.

So, this is an interesting development.

Who Is Making Chickpea Pizza Crust?

On Tuesday of this week, the California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) operation announced the introduction of Chickpea Pizza Crust.

Made with chickpeas, chia seeds, and honey, the crust is gluten-free and vegetarian-friendly.

This follows the June 8th news release from Banza, a maker of chickpea pasta. It was teaming up with the Oath Pizza chain to bring chickpea pizza crust to their restaurants.

Wait. That’s not all.

Banza’s partnership with Oath comes seven months after its own grocery launch of frozen chickpea pizza.

Company Comments

Brian Sullivan, SVP of Culinary Innovation at California Pizza Kitchen:

“At CPK, we’ve always been proud to answer the question ‘what’s next?’ for our guests, before they ask. We did it with gluten-free crust, then with Cauliflower Pizza Crust, and now we’re thrilled to innovate once again with the introduction of Chickpea Pizza Crust.”

Mike Tarullo, Chief Operating Officer at Banza:

“Since we launched our pizza in grocery, we’ve found that 50% of people who are buying it are brand new to frozen pizza. We’re thrilled that Oath is bringing our chickpea pizza crust to restaurants for the first time.”

Drew Kellogg, Chief Executive Officer at Oath Pizza:

“Banza’s chickpea pizza crust meets our high standards for taste and texture, and uniquely satisfies the dietary needs of our vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free guests—allowing us to inspire happiness in even more people.”

Banza was rolling out the new pizza crust in Oath’s 50+ restaurants this month. It was starting with the New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Virginia locations.

California Pizza Kitchen was focusing on specific locations. These include Huntington Beach, Long Beach, Manhattan Beach, Marina Del Rey, and Santa Monica in  Southern California. And CPK outlets in Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Orlando, Naples, and Palm Beach Gardens in Florida.

Final Thought

I know something about chickpeas. Besides adding cold to salads, I also like to bake chickpeas in the toaster oven. Long ago, I said goodbye to potato chips and popcorn as late-night snacks or Sunday afternoon football munchie options. Roasted chickpeas deliver a healthier, tastier, and crunchier alternative. Especially when you add in your own mix of spices.
