No matter how you slice it, plant-based pepperoni is going to be a “thing.” A couple of weeks back, I posted a story about Little Ceaser’s testing out Planteroni toppings. Yesterday (8/10/21), Pizza Hut served up its version of the meatless option: Beyond Pepperoni.

It’s part of a deal between Beyond Meat (which makes the plant-based pepperoni) and Yum! Brands (Pizza Hut’s parent company).

Pizza Hut will sell the product for a limited time at nearly 70 Pizza Hut test site locations. Those pizza stores will be in five cities: Albany, N.Y.; Columbus and Macon, Georgia; Houston, Texas; and Jacksonville, Fla. 

Why Focus on Plant-Based Pepperoni?

Forbes magazine reports that the global plant-based meat market is projected to reach $13.8 billion by 2027. That, my pizza eating followers reflects a compound annual growth rate of nearly 20%!

And we know that survey after survey indicates that pepperoni is America’s number one favorite topping.

So it stands to reason that the battle to win over new customers who do not eat meat (or perhaps those looking to limit meat products on pizza) should be fought over alternative pepperoni options.

Or should we call it a vegan option?

The Merriam-Webster website defines a vegan as a strict vegetarian who consumes no food (such as meat, eggs, or dairy products) that comes from animals.

The Statista website provides interesting tie-in info from a 2018 survey. It shows that nearly 40% of millennials identify as vegan. Baby Boomers and Generation X tie at 21% each.

“We know there is strong consumer demand for pepperoni, and we’re thrilled to unveil a game-changing plant-based pepperoni topping as the next chapter in our innovation-focused partnership with Pizza Hut.” That’s the word from Dariush Ajami, Beyond Meat’s chief innovation officer. 

Looking at the Ingredients

The Beyond Pepperoni item is said to be seasoned to a savory, smoky flavor “with just the right amount of subtle heat to deliver the classic Pizza Hut pepperoni experience.” 

Ok. But what is really in it?

  • peas
  • rice

And what’s not in it?

  • soy, 
  • gluten
  • hormones
  • antibiotics 
  • cholesterol  
  • genetically modified organisms

“Pizza Hut’s new Beyond Pepperoni Pizza delivers the same iconic taste as our original pepperoni that fans know and love,” said Georgeanne Erickson, Chief Brand Officer, Pizza Hut. “With this new plant-based option, we’re giving customers more choices and more reasons to love Pizza Hut.”

Since there was no disclaimer attached, I will assume that the plant-based pepperoni is available on any Pizza Hut crust.
